Eugène Ionesco: Macbett
Guest performance by the Hungarian State Theatre of Cluj

Ionesco's Macbett is not simply a parodic twist on Shakespeare's masterpiece, but a screening and exposure of a brutalized society that tends towards the absurd. With unrelenting humour, it depicts a public life driven and driven into chaos by the only thing that drives it is the constant fomenting of hostility. Macbett of Ionesco is also an absurdity of conspiracy. It speaks to today's viewer with surprising verve." Shakespeare's Macbeth is both a monster and a puppet, and Lady Macbeth is a monster. My Macbeth is not a monster. He's just as cowardly, disgraceful and power-hungry as Duncan, Banco, Glamiss or Candor. He is an average man." - says Ionesco of his piquant play, which incenses the moral and intellectual emptiness of man. He points out that, back in the Cold War years, politics was overrun by thoughtless, petty, bloody-nailed dozens of men clinging to the power they had acquired, unable to see beyond the narrow logic of destroying their political opponents. The possibility that emerged in the 1930s - that free elections would bring to power power power-mad, blood-bath-obsessed buffoons - is not a thing of the past, but a living temptation, which is better faced than repeating the horrors with the illusion of enlightenment.

The performance is part of the 10th Theatre Olympics.
