From the Castle to Pinocchio2022. 05. 01.
Kafka's novel The Castle by Viktor Bodó, Shakespeare's angry comedy, Measure for Measure, and a new musical version of Pinocchio directed by Tamás Keresztes will be performed at the Vígszínház in the 2022/23 season. At the Pesti Theatre, Artur Szőcs will stage the play Incognito and Jr. Attila Vidnyánszky the Three Nights of One Love, while Péter Valló will direct Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In connection with the birthday of the Vígszínház, the members of the company launched the Vígforest project with the professional support of the 10 Million Tree Foundation, and planted 126 saplings in a wooded area of one of the outer districts of Budapest with the intention of creating a tradition.
Following the tradition, the audience was able to discover the season ticketed performances and novelties of the 2022/23 season on the 126th birthday of the Vígtheatre. In addition to My Friend, Harvey, directed by Péter Valló and starring Péter Rudolf, two season premieres are planned. A new stage version of Franz Kafka's novel The Castle will be directed by Viktor Bodó with his usual absurd fantasy and grotesque humor. In a production of "a bit of a staggering with a partial break" Jr. Attila Vidnyánszky, Géza D. Hegedűs, László Méhes, Ákos Orosz, Patrícia Kovács and Csilla Radnay will also be seen. In December, Péter Rudolf will direct Shakespeare's last comedy, Measure for Measure, a comedy full of political games, mad desires, buffoons and lots of love. The main roles are played by Ákos Kőszegi, András Stohl, József Wunderlich, Luca Márkus, Zoltán Seress, Béla Fesztbaum and András Ötvös.
On 22 October, the Pesti Theatre will present Nick Payne's Incognito directed by Artur Szőcs starring Ervin Nagy, Patrícia Kovács, Luca Márkus and Szabolcs Horváth. The play is the story of a strange research on the brain of Albert Einstein, perhaps the greatest genius of the 20th century. The Three Nights of One Love is now a true classic, its strange-sounding, poetic interludes have become popular hits over the years. The musical drama is directed by Jr. Attila Vidnyánszky and András Kern, Sándor Lukács, Géza Hegedűs D. Hegedűs, Eszter Nagy-Kálózy, István Hirtling, Ákos Orosz, Zsombor Ertl and Sára Varga Járó will be seen in the main roles. Tennessee Williams's sultry Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is about a marriage, a family falling apart and being rescued. Directed by Péter Valló, the production will feature Csenge Szilágyi, Bencie Brasch, Géza Hegedűs D. Hegedűs, Éva Igó, Csilla Radnay and Péter Telekes in the spring of 2023 at Pesti Theatre.
In addition to the seasonal performances, the theatre is also preparing a children's performance on the main stage in the spring: a new musical version of Pinocchio will be staged by Tamás Keresztes with Gábor Presser. The Studio Stage will continue the tradition of previous seasons with contemporary Hungarian dramas. In the second half of the season, rehearsals will begin for Ferenc Molnár's The Glass Slipper, which will be directed by János Mohácsi and premieres at the beginning of the 2023/24 season.
The company of the Vígtheatre has begun the ecological restoration of a wooded area outside Budapest, the Vígforest. To celebrate the theatre's birthday, the members planted 126 saplings with the professional support of the 10 Million Tree Foundation. The saplings, which are native and resistant to the drought of climate change, will help to restore the natural vegetation in the area.
New for the 2022/23 season, the Vígszínház is also offering youth season tickets for primary and secondary school students, which will allow them to see audience favorites such as The Paul Street Boys, The One Who Has Nobody Under the Blue Skies, Toldi, The Visit or Love’s Labours Lost at a discount. Alongside the season performances, theatre education sessions help students to interpret what they see and to explore the issues raised by the plays.
On average, season ticket holders of the Vígtheatre, the Pesti Theatre and the Combined Season Ticket can see the latest productions with a 20% discount. Season ticket holders also receive pre-sale rights and special discounts, as well as exclusive events and behind-the-scenes programs.
